3 Hacks to Save on Monthly Home Costs

3 Hacks to Save on Monthly Home Costs

One of the surest ways to save on your monthly home costs is to make sure you are not wasting energy. It’s easy to think that turning the thermostat up in the summer and down in the winter will save money, but it won’t! As a matter of fact, when temperatures fluctuate a lot during the day, or if there are big differences between indoor and outdoor temperatures at night, your heating/cooling system has to work harder than it would otherwise. So here are some hacks for saving on monthly home costs:

Winterize rooms you aren’t using

If you’re not using a room, it’s a good idea to turn off the heat and close windows and doors. If there’s no one else in the house, use a fan to circulate air through the rest of your home. This will keep your heating system from overworking and save you money on your monthly heating bill.

Utilize your power strips

Power strips are your best friend. Whether you’re at home or not, turn off the power strip when you don’t need to use the electronics plugged into it. You might also want to consider turning off your computer and monitor when not in use (and unplugging them from their respective power source). This will save money and energy by preventing unnecessary use of electricity!

3 Words: Insulation, Insulation, Insulation

Insulation is the key to saving on your monthly home costs. It’s so important that it should probably be a word in its own right, like “mimosas”.

You can do-it-yourself (DIY), or hire an expert; either way, this project is worth your while. If you aren’t handy with tools, consider hiring someone to do it for you. The payback will be worth it when you see how much money this simple fix will save.

Insulation helps keep the heat inside during cold weather and keeps the cool air in during summer months when windows are left open for ventilation. Adding insulation to the attic will also help keep down utility bills by keeping those rooms cooler or warmer as needed without having to turn up or down the thermostat as often as before.
